Cage Warriors 53 Results

Glasgow was the venue for Cage Warriors second show of the year; an excellent card was headlined by a Featherweight Title Fight as the promotion begins life after Conor McGregor. We had two Irish fighters on the card both fighting out of Team Ryano. Also on the card were couple Joanne Calderwood and James Doolan. Cage Warriors offered us a preview of how the two were preparing for the fight.

On the night unfortunately James could not get it done and was out grappled on the night by James Pennington in a passing of the torch bout in the Featherweight division. Pennington was deducted a point in the first round for strikes to the back of the head but he overcame this minor setback to out grapple the Dinky Ninja’s man and secure the victory with a deep armbar. However the couple had some joy on the night as Joanne Calderwood disposed of American, Sally Krumdiack via first round TKO. Calderwood is now 6-0 and is scheduled to fight on Invicta 6; she no doubt has her sights set on Carla Espinoza’s 115 pound championship.

A mixed night from an Irish perspective; with Richy Edgeworth coming up short against Jean N’Doye. Edgeworth impressed with his stand up in the early rounds against one of his toughest opponents to date. N’Doye wanted nothing to do with the standup exchanges and dragged the fight to the mat where Richy battled valiantly but eventually tapped to a rear naked choke in the second. N’Doye looked great and I would love to see Paul Dollery and Co. match this guy with Alan Philpott.

Dubliner Neil Seery, reminded everyone why he is Europes Number 2. ranked flyweight with a spectacular TKO over Paul Marin. Seery floored the Romanian with a body kick and Neil Hall wisely stopped the fight. This victory takes Team Ryano to 8-3 in their last 11 fights on Cage Warriors; a record any of Europe’s top gyms would be proud of. Congratulations to Andy Ryan.

In the main event Jim Alers showed while Cage Warriors may have just lost one superstar they have themselves a capable replacement. Alers exploded in the first round with some great striking and grappling; Savolova survived but fatigued late on alllowing Alers to sink a spectacular triangle finish. Be sure to check out the Cage Warriors website for fight videos as they are released.
